Minnesota Ice House Removal Deadlines – 2026
As ice fishing season winds down across Minnesota, it’s important to plan ahead for ice house removal.
The Minnesota DNR has set the following 2026 removal deadlines for inland lakes:
-
Southern two-thirds of Minnesota: Remove ice shelters by 11:59 p.m. on March 2, 2026
-
Northern third of Minnesota: Remove ice shelters by 11:59 p.m. on March 16, 2026
-
Minnesota/Wisconsin border waters: Deadline is March 1
-
Minnesota/Canada border waters: Deadline is March 31
Failure to remove shelters by these dates may result in citation or possible removal or destruction by authorities.
Portable shelters must be removed daily when not in use. For more details visit the Minnesota DNR website.

Why This Matters
As temperatures rise, ice conditions can change quickly. Waiting too long increases risk — both for your equipment and for safe lake access.
Removing fish houses on time:
-
Protects public lake access
-
Prevents damage to your trailer or structure
-
Avoids fines and potential loss of equipment
-
Keeps Minnesota lakes clean for next season
Before You Store It for the Season
This is also a good time to check:
-
Tires and wheel bearings
-
Brakes and wiring
-
Frame and hitch components
-
Interior condition and flooring
Ice houses take a beating during the season. A quick inspection now can prevent problems next winter.
